SOMEONE EMAILED ME A SIMPLE QUESTION ABOUT DUVETS AND I GAVE THEM A RIDICULOUSLY LONG RESPONSE. IT’S A SLOOOOOW DAY AT WORK YALL. REAL REAL SLOW.

Katherine:

I’m looking for a comforter. Where would you suggest getting one? I’ve already looked at smartbargains, overstock, bluefly, macy’s, bloomingdale’s, garnet hill, ll bean, and the company store. they all look fine, but it’s hard to tell online. I am also open to quilt, blanket, throw, duvet cover and sheet suggestions.

So — bedding. Here we go.

I have a down alternative comforter from The Company Store, and I LOVE it. Here is a weird confession: I got down alternative BECAUSE WHAT IF I DATE SOMEONE THAT IS ALLERGIC TO DOWN????????? I am nutjob. A very prepared nutjob.

I also have an inexpensive Ikea comforter because I like a lot of fluff. Sometimes I sleep on top of it.

And then, because I like the weight of it in the winter, I recommend a heavy cotton pickstitched quilt. I’ve had that one since my first year of college and I still like it. Wool military blankets will do the trick for cheap.

So that is my reasoning for basic linens: one fluffy investment, one fluffy cheapo, and something heavy to put on top. All of the stores that you listed are sure to have a good option. Perhaps you should choose in the same way that I choose my wine. Not the cheapest, but the second cheapest. Sup tacky.

On to more fun: duvets.

I will always recommend “hotel bedding” with a strong simple outline. I have no idea where that one is from, but the orange color is ridicccc and I want it. Here’s a cheap-ish option.

I also like:

I advise against Urban Outfitters, Target, Kmart, etc, because the fabric gets either stiff or pilly. You’re going to use this stuff for a while, so you might as well commit and spend a little bit more. I use the same reasoning for choosing something simple — that way your decor can change around it.

Now onto slightly less fun: sheets. Here’s a sweet Remodelista post on simple sheets. I trust anything they say.

Hope this helps!

Sweet rainy Thursday. That chill is encouraging, right?

We’re moving Tuesday.
